Is horse meat halal to consume?

Slide 1
Previous Next

QUESTION:

What is the ruling of eating horsemeat in the Hanafi madhab, are we sinful for eating it?

ANSWER:

It is makruh tahriman (prohibitively disliked) to eat horse meat in the Hanafi School, therefore to eat it will be regarded as a sin.

Imam Ahmad Rida Khan (رحمة الله عليه) writes, “In our Imam-e-Azam’s school of thought, consuming horse meat is makruh tahriman likewise with a mule whose mother was a female horse.”

Allah knows best.

Answered by Mawlana Mohammed Kashif

** Ala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Rida Khan (رحمة الله عليه) states, “The fatwa is on the qowl of the Imam, tanzihi or tahrimi (ie two opinions are related from him – both given status of correctness by different Imams within the Hanafi madhab) and the most correct and preponderant view is karahatu tahrim.”
