QUESTION:

Can we hold our spouses hand in public?

ANSWER:

Islam is a religion of modesty which teaches its followers to be modest all the times. Therefore, though not prohibited, it is not a good practice to hold your spouse’s hand in public without any need.

The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وصحبه وسلم) said,

فَإِنَّ الْحَيَاءَ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ

“Indeed modesty is from faith.”

[Bukhari Book 78, Hadith 145]

Also, Hazrat Anas (رضي الله عنه) narrates from the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وصحبه وسلم),

مَا كَانَ الْحَيَاءُ فِي شَيْءٍ إِلاَّ زَانَهُ

“Modesty is not present in anything but that it beautifies it.”

[Tirmidhi Book 27, Hadith 2102]

Allah knows best.
